Volleyball falls twice to top-10 foes on the road
The UW women's volleyball team (10-6 Big Ten, 16-8 overall) lost twice this weekend to highly ranked Big Ten opponents. The Badgers were topped by No. 4 Penn State Friday in four games before being swept by No. 8 Ohio State (14-2, 24-2) Saturday.
The Badgers opened Friday's match by winning the first game, but the Nittany Lions won the next three to take the match. Wisconsin was previously 15-0 when winning the first game of a match.
The Badgers did well statistically, outplaying Penn State in all aspects except for serving. They committed 13 service errors to just four aces.
Wisconsin as a team had a season-high 91 digs, but it was not enough as Penn State won three straight close games to take the match. Freshman libero Jocelyn Wack tallied 29 defensive saves, the third most by a Badger in a four-game match. Junior middle blocker Maria Carlini posted a career-high 20 digs and senior outside hitter Jill Odenthal added 15.
Saturday night was a different story. Ohio State dictated every facet of the game en route to a three-game sweep. The Badgers were held to just a .175 hitting percentage for the match.
\It was a disappointing road trip for us,"" Head Coach Pete Waite said. ""It was three top-ranked teams three matches in a row, so we're going to have to come back after this and look ahead to the net two Big Ten weekends and improve our game.""
Men's runners win NCAA Regional
The No. 1 ranked Wisconsin men's cross country team ran to its 20th NCAA Great Lakes Regional Saturday, earning an automatic bid into its 33rd NCAA championship.
The Badgers placed six runners in the top 25 and three in the top 10, led by senior Matt Tegenkamp who finished sixth.
The women's cross country team will not wait to see if it earns an at-large big in the NCAA Championship after finishing eighth at the regional.
Season ends in NCAA second round loss
The Wisconsin women's soccer team defeated Dayton 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday before falling 1-0 to Notre Dame in the second round.
Junior midfielder/forward Amy Vermeulen scored seven minutes into overtime to extend the Badgers' season one more game.
In their final game, the Badgers held the No. 2 Fighting Irish scoreless for the majority of the game, but lost in a heartbreaker when Notre Dame scored in the final minute to end Wisconsin's season.
