Earl hat trick sparks Badger sweep
Sophomore forward Robbie Earl earned his second career hat trick Friday night as the Badger men's hockey team (7-3-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 9-3-0 overall) swept the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves (3-5-0, 5-6-1) with back-to-back 4-1 wins.
Earl scored three goals in the second period of Friday night's contest as the Badgers outshot the Seawolves 31-15.
The Badgers took on Anchorage again Saturday, winning by the same score. Sophomore goalie Brian Elliott got the start in goal for the Badgers, making 28 saves in a victory in which four different Badgers scored.
The two wins, combined with a Minnesota loss Saturday, gave the Badgers sole possession of first place in the WCHA.
UW scores 12 goals in sweep of North Dakota
The Wisconsin women's hockey team (7-3-0 WCHA, 9-3-0 overall) outscored North Dakota (3-9-0, 3-10-1) 12-3 in two games this weekend, earning four league points.
Five different Badgers scored Saturday in the team's 5-1 win. Sophomore goaltender Christine Dufour made 20 saves and the Badgers scored three first-period goals in the win.
Sunday's game saw much of the same as Wisconsin jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes en route to a 7-2 victory. Junior goalie Meghan Horras needed to make just nine saves in the game, six of which were in the second period, as the Sioux, in their first year in the WCHA, struggled on offense.
Wisconsin heads to Boston next weekend to take on Harvard and Northeastern.
Williams will redshirt his freshman season
Wisconsin men's basketball freshman forward DeAaron Williams announced Sunday he will redshirt his freshman season.
\I thought about it for awhile, but I just thought it was the best decision for me,"" Williams said. ""It was a win-win situation. Another year will only help.""
Williams did not take part in either of the Badgers' exhibition games nor UW's regular season opener against Penn Saturday.
The Peoria, Ill., native averaged 18.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in his senior season at Peoria Limestone High School.
