Women's hoopsters lose twice at Houston Classic
The UW women's basketball team (2-2) fell twice over the weekend in Houston. A hot second half from Houston Friday night resulted in a 86-61 blowout. On Saturday the Badgers kept it close, but two late turnovers resulted in a 77-74 defeat to Middle Tennessee State.
The Badgers shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half Friday and led by one at halftime, but Houston piled on 51 points in the second half to run away with the win.
Saturday's game featured 19 total turnovers, two of which ended the Badgers' hopes for a victory.
Senior guard Stephanie Rich, who led the Badgers with 20 points, put UW up by one point with 1:34 to play. But the Badgers gave up the ball twice, resulting in four points and a three-point win for the Lady Raiders.
\This was a game we should have won, but we didn't bring our defensive presence from start to finish,"" Head Coach Lisa Stone said. ""Our team is better than this. Our inability to put the dagger in and win the game was very frustrating.""
Volleyball earns ninth-straight tourney bid
The Wisconsin volleyball team (13-7 Big Ten, 19-9 overall) closed out the season over the long weekend, falling in three games at Purdue Friday but defeating Indiana in four games Saturday.
The Badgers finished the season in sole possession of fourth place in the Big Ten and earned their ninth straight tournament bid Sunday evening.
Wisconsin, the No. 14 seed in the tournament overall, will host first and second round action this weekend.
The Badgers will take on Loyola (21-8) and will also host Notre Dame (20-8) against Valparaiso (29-4). Both games will take place Friday with the winners playing each other Saturday to see who will advance to Regional competition at UW-Green Bay.
Women's skaters win two
The No. 5 UW women's hockey team (7-3-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association, 10-3-0 overall) had a successful weekend on the road, defeating No. 4 Harvard 6-4 and Northeastern 4-0 to conclude their lengthy road stretch.
Sophomore forward Lindsay Macy scored twice in the first period Friday as the two teams battle back and forth.
The Badgers held one-goal leads after each of the first two periods, but tied the game at 4-4 early in the third. The Badgers battled back. Junior forward Nikki Burish scored at the 13:20 mark-the eventual game-winner-and UW tacked on an empty-net goal for the 6-4 win.
UW came back again Saturday and dominating Northeastern. Freshman defender Emily Morris scored twice, and the Badgers held Northeastern to just seven shots.
The Badgers return home to take on No. 1 Minnesota next weekend.
