City Council members met Tuesday to discuss and vote on resolutions including those to approve maintenance charges for the State Street Mall and to use budget funds to support the Progressive Housing Alliance.
Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, sponsored an action to approve maintenance charges for the State Street Mall and Capitol Concourse. Theresa Ferrell of Calvary Lutheran Chapel spoke in opposition of the motion, saying the church received no notification of the charges until Tuesday afternoon and was averse to paying them.
\These are the longstanding, rather minimal assessments that we impose for the maintenance of State Street Mall and Capitol Concourse. This is nothing new,"" Verveer replied. The motion passed.
Ald. Tim Bruer, District 14, sponsored a motion to approve part of the South Madison Capitol budget revitalization funds, which would allow the Progressive Housing Alliance to obtain and renovate affordable housing in Madison. Ald. Andrew Heidt, District 13, who has served on the Progressive Housing Alliance board for more than a year, said the board has struggled to find locations for affordable housing.
""It's incredibly challenging in this body to try to get the capital together to make these projects work,"" he said.
