Authorities arrested two suspects Thursday morning believed to be involved in a mysterious murder case that spans Juneau, Sauk and Dane counties, according to a statement from the Middleton Police Department.
At approximately 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, security from Marriott West Hotel, 1313 Hammons Q. Dr., notified the Middleton Police Department that two men eating lunch at their establishment wished to confess to crimes they had allegedly committed Tuesday.
Police arrested the two men, later identified as Bernie Frier of Baraboo, Wis., and Maurice Mason of Mauston, Wis.
Later that morning, one of the two men led authorities to a wooded area in Sauk County where a woman was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The same man, whom authorities have refused to identify, also led police to a shed in Juneau County where officers found a man bound with duct tape and twine. The man was the victim of a robbery and was found alive, but unconscious, according to the release.
Middleton Police officers say they believe the two men may also be suspects in the death of John Romberg, a Baraboo taxi driver who was also found fatally shot in the head in Juneau County. Romberg was murdered Tuesday night while sitting in the driver's seat of his taxi, which was running in his driveway.
Middleton Police Detective Craig Faga said because of the magnitude of the crimes committed, the suspects might be tried in all three counties.
Faga, unsure why the two men turned themselves in, speculated both men probably had an intense feeling of guilt.
\Allegedly, the woman was a girlfriend of one of the suspects,"" Faga said. ""That probably made them feel very guilty.""
Authorities acknowledged that the case seems very unusual and are currently searching for motives.
Dane County Public Information Officer Elise Schaeffer said Frier is currently being held in Dane County, and Mason in Sauk County.
