UW men's soccer nabs All-Big Ten Honors

Nick Van Sicklen highlighted a list of seven Wisconsin men's soccer players who received honors at the Big Ten banquet last Thursday.

Van Sicklen, the Badgers senior tri-captain, was the only Badger to receive first team All-Big Ten honors. Fellow tri-captain senior Noah Goerlitz and sophomore Aaron Hohlbein were named to the All-Big Ten second team.

The Badgers also had three freshmen selected to the Big Ten's all-freshman team. Midfielders Eric Ortega and B.J. Goodman, along with defender Nick Caronna.

The Big Ten also announced Eric Hanson was Wisconsin's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. This award is delivered to student athletes who excel in sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The athlete is also chosen for excellence in academics and community service. Henson, who was honored for the second straight year, is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to one male and one female for each institution at the end of the year.

Van Sicklen, who received his third consecutive All-Big Ten honor, lead the team in goals and assists, amassing 31 points: 12 goals and seven assists. Van Sicklen was named to the All-Big Ten second team last year, and the first team in 2002.

Hohlbein received his second consecutive Big Ten honor while Goerlitz was named to the second team for the second year in a row after recording five assists as the key player in the Badger midfield.

The three freshmen also played an important role on this Badger's team. Carrona played in all but one game this season as a defender. Ortega played in 18 games and tallied four points, while Goodman finished fifth on the team with five points.

The Badgers finished the season with a 9-10 record, ending on a 1-0 loss to Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.
