Who better to squelch rumors that Barry Alvarez may be leaving UW-Madison to coach football at Notre Dame than the head coach himself?
In a Tuesday interview on Sporting News Radio's \The Tim Brando Show,"" Alvarez said while he would talk to Notre Dame Athletic Director Kevin White, he has no plans to leave UW-Madison for the golden domes of South Bend, Ind.
""Sure, I'd take [White's] call. I consider him a friend,"" Alvarez said on the show. ""But I'm not interested in any job.""
Rumors regarding Alvarez's possible exodus to Notre Dame surfaced Monday when WNDU-TV, a South Bend television station, reported a source close to Alvarez said if Alvarez was offered the job, he would accept.
Alvarez, who also serves as UW-Madison's athletic director, was Notre Dame's defensive coordinator in 1988 and '89. The head coach position at Notre Dame became available after the school fired former Head Coach Tyrone Willingham Nov. 30.
Alvarez has been the football coach at Wisconsin since 1990.
