Mind Your Morsels

Q: Dear DNC,

How do energy bars help with exercise?

A: Energy bars help replenish glycogen levels, which is the fuel that keeps you going, due to their high carbohydrate content.

These bars are only needed for prolonged exercise, usually an hour or longer, because that is when your glycogen levels begin to deplete and fatigue sets in.

A small amount of carbohydrates, between 100 and 200 kilocalories, is essential every 15-20 minutes to maximize energy levels and better one's performance.
