A UW-Madison sociology professor lost a battle with cancer Jan. 14.
Frederick H. Buttel taught rural sociology for almost 13 years. He retired in November and established the Frederick Buttel Fund, which gave money to the rural sociology department to use for a variety of purposes. Buttel left a dairy farm in Freeport, Ill., nearly 40 years ago to come to Madison. He received his bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. from UW-Madison.
He went on to teach and conduct research at Michigan State University, Ohio State University and Cornell University.
