Spring Break Stories

With winter break over, quasi-depressed college students everywhere can find solace in at least one thing-thinking about Spring Break. The typical Spring Break includes drunken clubbing, MTV cameras and perhaps an unwanted infection or two.

Panama City Beach, Fla.

UW-Madison senior Luke Louison went to Panama City last year, a popular location he called \the best and cheapest place to go for Spring Break."" He drove down, and the entire trip cost about $600.

During the day, Louison and his friends drank on the beach, a legal pastime in Panama Beach.

Louison bought a ""gold card,"" which saved him money at the clubs. ""It's a good idea if you're willing to go to the clubs early,"" he said. They later ""partied with Li'l Jon.""

Daytona Beach, Fla.

UW-Madison senior Kelly Schweiger has spent Spring Breaks in Panama City as well as Daytona. Although she said Daytona was not as much of a ""hot spot"" as Panama City, she had a lot of fun. She flew to Daytona and spent under $500 on the entire trip, saving some money by staying at ""a shady little motel.""

""Right in front of our place was where the cars are allowed on the beach. It was kind of cool to watch the cars,"" Schweiger remembered.

""You should beware of those party passes. You had to go to a certain club every night, and there were such long lines. Plus you could only get free drinks for a limited time,"" she said.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

UW-Madison senior Justin Wolf took a more luxurious vacation to Ocho Rios, Jamaica last year. He liked Ocho Rios because he ""could do all the typical Spring Break stuff, but it wasn't overly crowded and was a little more laid back,"" Wolf said. His all-inclusive trip cost about $1,200.

Wolf and his friends went deep-sea fishing.

""I'm not one for the high seas,"" Wolf said, recalling he threw up four times while on the boat. They also went to a beach party at Margaritaville, a club about a mile away from their resort. It had volleyball courts, a waterslide that started on the second floor and a swim-up bar.

Jackson Hole, Wyo.

Two years ago, UW-Madison senior Steve Resnik went skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyo. with Hoofers for Spring Break. The trip cost him under $400.

Once they finally arrived, Resnik and his friends went skiing every day.

""There wasn't any bar action,"" Resnik said. So he and his friends drank

in their motel at night.

""The mini-fridge was key,"" he said.

Although it wasn't the greatest trip he ever took, ""Because it was so cheap, I would give it a good review,"" Resnik said.

Myrtle Beach, S.C.

UW-Madison senior Andrea Schieble went to Myrtle Beach for spring break three years ago. Because she drove, the trip cost only approximately $400.

Once her group arrived, Schieble spent her days at the beach and nights at the clubs. Their favorite club was Mother Fletchers.

Schieble had a great time. Her favorite memory was of the morning they left.

""My friend was still drunk from the night before-we went shopping for souvenirs, and she passed out laying in the parking lot,"" Schieble said.
