A bill that would require Wisconsin voters to present photo identification before they can receive a ballot is sure to face heavy scrutiny when it appears before the state Assembly.
The bill passed through the Committee on Campaigns and Elections Wednesday, according to a statement from the bill's co-author, Rep. Jeff Stone, R-Greendale.
The Assembly will likely debate the bill Feb. 22. Gov. Doyle has already said he will veto the bill if it is approved by the Legislature.
Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl announced Thursday he is forming his re-election campaign. Kohl has hired veteran Democratic organizer Michael Teter to head the effort.
Kohl will be seeking his third re-election to the Senate in 2006. Kohl won in 2000 with 62 percent of the vote.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday that Iran must live up to international obligations aimed at curbing the spread of nuclear weapons.
\I believe that everyone is telling the Iranians that they're going to have to live up to their international obligations, or next steps are in the offing,' Rice said in response to a question on whether the Europeans have delivered the nonproliferation message strongly enough. ""And I think everyone understands what next steps mean.'
""The Iranians should take the opportunity that the Europeans are giving them,' Rice said. ""I think the message is there. The Iranians need to get that message. And we can certainly always remind them that there are other steps that the international community has at its disposal, should they not be prepared to live up to these obligations.'
Rice said the Bush administration has ""set no deadline"" as to how long diplomacy should continue.
Mayor Dave Cieslewicz spoke at the Dane County Democratic Party meeting last night, presenting his views regarding the future of the Democratic Party in the wake of the 2004 elections.
George Twigg, Cieslewicz's spokesperson, said the Democratic Party is considering two avenues to pursue. One is moving ""toward the middle"" and appealing to swing voters, much like Republicans are doing to garner popularity. The other is to present a clear contrast agenda to the Republicans.
""The Mayor has come down firmly on the side of laying out very clearly our differences in policy,"" Twigg said. ""We need to set a very clear agenda.\
