UW-Madison freshman and women's basketball redshirt Lesha Jones will make her initial court appearance today at 10 a.m. to face probable charges of burglary and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Authorities delivered Jones to the Dane County Jail for her booking last Monday and released her soon afterward. Tuesday the UW Athletic Department issued a news release announcing Jones' suspension from the team for violating its student conduct policy. Jones can attempt to appeal her suspension, which is scheduled to last until the court passes a verdict on her charges.

The contentiously debated proposed constitutional amendment that would both define marriage as between a man and a woman as well as prohibit civil unions will not be a part of the April 5 election, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Saturday.

To be put on the ballot for voters, the proposal has to pass through two legislative sessions. While the bill passed through the Legislature in 2004, lawmakers would have had to pass the bill by Tuesday in order to get it on the upcoming ballot. But with legislators wrangling over property taxes and Gov. Jim Doyle's budget, they ran out of time.

The marriage bill will likely be introduced again in the fall, with the Republican majority possibly angling to place the amendment on the November 2006 ballot to bring out conservative voters. That election is packed with incumbent Democrats Doyle, Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager and Sen. Herb Kohl all seeking re-election.
