UW-Madison students will get a preview today of what the United Council of UW Students has cooked up for the state Legislature when the group presents its \Keep the UW Doors Open to All"" campaign on Library Mall.
The event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m., and will showcase doors from the UW System schools the Council has had students from around the state sign, according to Council President Stephanie Hilton.
Hilton said the campaign is meant to illustrate how more students are being excluded from attending UW System schools due to tuition increases not being matched by appropriate financial aid increases.
According to a Council press release, tuition will have gone up 51 percent in a four-year period if the current tuition proposal stands unchanged.
""Literally, doors are being closed in the faces of students because they just can't afford to go [to UW schools] anymore,"" she said.
UW-Madison students will get a chance to sign these doors, which will be presented to members of the state Legislature-specifically members of the joint committee on finance-on Feb. 24 during a massive rally at the Capitol, Hilton said.
Representatives of each campus will present their respective legislative member with their door, as a reminder to consider students when they decide the state's budget.
""Students are definitely watching what [legislators] are doing and hoping they'll make the right choices when the votes start happening on the budget,"" Hilton said.
