City awaits designs for art at new swimming pool

Armed with $75,000, members of the Ad Hoc Swimming Pool Committee are planning to add a splash of artwork to Madison's new pool.

The committee approved the funding for future design and installation of public artwork at the Goodman Swimming Pool at Franklin Park Tuesday evening.

\I think it will be a very attractive pool for both residents and non-residents to be a part of,"" committee member Nino Amato said.

The committee will await approval from both the City Council and City Arts Committee after making requests for proposals with no restrictions on the form of artwork that will be used in the pool, committee member Jim Morgan said. These requests will include proposals for art forms such as water fixtures, murals and fabric art, he added.

The pool will have single and family memberships available for both residents and non-residents of Madison, Morgan said.

Currently, the yearly family memberships are set at a price of $350 to encourage non-residents to purchase them, Ald. Judy Compton, District 16, said.

""We want to have as many non-resident memberships as possible, and that price is too high,"" Morgan said. It is important to allow scholarship programs to allow non-residents use of the pool, he added.

Concerns arise when people do not have a low enough income to qualify for scholarships, Compton said. ""We need to be sure that these people can use the pool by setting the non-residential family membership at a lower, reasonable range,"" she added.

Both residential and non-residential students will have a lower daily fee, Compton said. Problems may arise when children do not have identification or residency to show upon entry to the pool, she added.

""From a kid stand-point, you do not want to hassle them by demanding them to put identification on the table,"" Morgan said.

The committee agreed to the use of a national software database that holds pictures of members including their personal information and members would receive either laminated membership cards or patches to be sown on bathing suits.

""Further research on ID cards, patches and non-resident daily fees is something we have to do,"" Amato said.
