Plans continue for Dayton, Park St. dorms

Although it announced some minor changes, the Joint Southeast Campus Area Committee revealed Monday that plans are on track for the Dayton and Park Street residence halls as well as the Campus Master Plan.

Gary Brown, Director of Planning and Landscape Architecture for the university, outlined changes for the new dorm complex. Larger windows in the stairwells and new staircases to give pedestrians additional access to the dorm are two changes that were presented at the meeting.

Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said he was pleased with the efforts of the committee to address community concerns.

A basement, which would house utility services and leave more room for student facilities, is still a possibility for the Park Street dorm, but it will depend on the bids of construction companies according to Alan Fish, associate vice chancellor.

The two new dorms are part of the Campus Master Plan, which outlines numerous changes to the campus in the next 10 years. Although different architects designed the Dayton and Park Street dorms, they are in similar styles, Brown said.

Fish explained the campus Master Plan will attempt to fit all new building renovations into an aesthetic scheme.

Speaking of the two new residence halls, he said, \We wanted to get the buildings to feel like they were in the same family, but different siblings.""

The second purpose of the meeting was an update on the Campus Master Plan. Brown outlined possible upcoming changes to the east side of campus.

He said 20 buildings, including Van Hise, are being considered for possible replacement. He added many of the buildings that might be demolished were built during the 1960s and 1970s.

Fish noted the Master Plan is an ambitious program for UW-Madison.

""It's a whole set of projects going from Regent Street all the way to the lake, many of which will be built in the next five years,"" he said.
