Robert wanted to break away from the university, so one summer he followed in his father's and grandfather's footsteps, hopped a train and headed to the coast. He didn't intend on being a beach bum-he wanted to use some elbow grease to toughen up. The local scrap yards didn't need him so he became a worker in a shipyard. When his buddies back home asked him what he was doing, he said he was being a Doeckel.
