The top news of the day in UW men's tennis should be that the team lost its eighth Big Ten match of the season and was eliminated from the Big Ten tournament. Instead, Pat Klingelhoets, resigned as head coach of the Badgers after a 23-year tenure.
\I certainly enjoyed my time at Wisconsin,"" Klingelhoets told uwbadgers.com. ""I have had the opportunity to work with many fine young men. It's been fun. Now, I'm just going to relax, enjoy the summer and see what the future brings.""
An accomplished player himself, Klingelhoets resigned with a 291-286 overall record along with a three finish atop the Big Ten standings.
Klingelhoets' decision is effective immediately and was announced right after the Badgers' loss to Minnesota.
The Badgers lost 4-1 to the Gophers with freshman Jeremy Sonkin registering the only win for the Badgers. Sonkin won his singles match 6-1, 6-1.
Minnesota took the doubles point from senior Alex Kasarov and sophomore Lachezar Kasarov to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
The other three Gopher points came quickly enough to render the No. 4 and No. 6 matches unnecessary.
Klingelhoets leaves behind a talented group of underclassmen, namely Sonkin who finished his season 16-5 in the spring season, while playing in the No. 2 position and 24-12 overall.
