Humorology unites Greek system for charity, laughs

Spring has come around and the Greek system has brought back Humorology, the mini Broadway-esque musicals, and this year the theme is \Make It Happen.""

Humorology, which has celebrated 58 years of student shows, brings to life months of effort by the students involved, with all the proceeds going to charity.

Humo is raising money for Camp Heartland, which they call ""a charitable non-profit organization"" helping children with HIV/AIDS, and The Chris Farley Foundation, which is ""dedicated to the prevention of substance abuse.""

Each show, which lasts about 20 to 25 minutes, pairs a fraternity and sorority to put on each comic musical.

""We've been working since early October,"" said Krystal Bucher, a UW-Madison senior and lead vocalist from Gamma Phi, and the effort really shows. Each show has its own story pertaining to ""Make It Happen,"" from a lovelorn silver- spoon heiress to a band of college students trying to make it home after being warped back in time, with wackiness ensuing.

The entire production is student-made, including the script, set and even the choreography. With elaborate sets and choreography that would make even the most stubborn get up and boogie, each Humo show has its own flavor. The show ""Viva Las Vegas,"" a story about a wide-eyed, small-town southern girl in the big city of Las Vegas, has an amazingly choreographed scene right out of ""You Got Served.""

One of the most impressive aspects of each show is the talent of the performers. UW senior Heidi Tiefenthaler, the lead in ""Viva,"" said she has ""been acting professionally since age 12."" Her duet with freshman Stephanie Liebergen brings together two trained vocalists. Liebergen herself has been singing and dancing since age six.

So what's the best part of Humorology? Many would say the actual performance, but freshman Tony Litrenta said ""Humo hell week, with eight-hour practices. We all have to do the hard stuff, but it's still fun. It sucks, six hours in a sorority house, but it's awesome.""
