For an incident April 7, James Jenkins III faces charges of 2nd degree assault, habitual criminality, burglary, disorderly conduct and use of a dangerous weapon. Jenkins allegedly broke into the co-op at 244 W. Lake Lawn Pl. and assaulted a resident while in the possession of some type of weapon.
UW-Madison researchers have inserted engineered human stem cells into the spinal cords of rats suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in an effort to assist surgeons in treating the deadly disease, according to a UW-Madison release.
ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, causes death and decay to motor neurons that control muscle movement by relaying messages from the spinal cord to the brain.
Before injecting the cells into the rats, the researchers directed certain types of neural stem cells to give off a neuron-producing protein. They did not, however, use human embryonic stem cells, which can develop into any of the 220 tissue and cell types in humans. These stem cells have long been regarded as a pivotal ingredient to curing spinal injuries and neurodegenerative disease.
A felon working for a contract security company used an unlicensed handgun to kill a man whom he thought was stealing sunglasses at a Milwaukee Walgreens Sunday.
The guard, Sam Gwin Jr., 53, was working when the victim, Alexander Mitchell, entered with a friend around 11:30 p.m. and allegedly attempted to steal sunglasses, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Gwin confronted Mitchell outside the store and after a short scuffle shot him three times.
Because of his felony status, Gwin was not qualified to carry a firearm by the state Department of Regulation and Licensing. The department has launched a \priority"" investigation into the matter, focusing on the company that hired Gwin, Security Experts of Milwaukee.
Mitchell was a single father of four and a part-time custodian.
