Despite a number of City Council seats up for grabs, as well as a host of other contested positions, today's election turnout is predicted to be low as usual. Local politicians, however, met at Memorial Union Monday to urge students and community members to get out and vote.
Kathleen Falk, Dane County executive, along with Ald. Austin King, District 8, asked for support and a wide voter turnout in today's election.
As county executive running for another term, Falk said she has worked to fund housing in the county through the Tenant Resource Center and fund the Rape Crisis Center, Planned Parenthood and the AIDS Network.
\All of these issues are decided in these elections [Tuesday],"" Falk said.
Although the election does not have an effect on the war in Iraq or other big issues around the world, what is done in the city hall and within the county is really important and affects the community, Falk said.
King, who is running against business owner Kami Eshraghi, noted the importance of the election because of the impact on campus issues such as alcohol policy and registration, tenants rights, and affordable housing.
""Turnout in spring election has been tragically low ... but local government hits home more than Washington does,"" King said.
Along with the City Council and county executive elections, the ballot contains elections for state superintendent, two school board seats and two referendums.
