The UW-Madison College Republicans have named UW-Madison Dean of Students Luoluo Hong the winner of their Enemy of Freedom Award, according to a College Republicans press release.
The award traditionally goes to an individual or institution that, by word or deed, undermines the advance of core Republican principles in the eyes of the College Republicans.
The group presented the award to Hong for, among other reasons, allegedly attempting to end the College Republicans' existence in fall 2004 by filing a complaint in a student committee and allegedly actively working to snub conservative voices on campus.
The Madison Observer, a student-run bi-weekly newspaper at UW-Madison, is taking legal action against fellow student-run bi-weekly The Mendota Beacon for the Beacon's alleged cybersquatting of two Observer Internet domains, according to an Observer press release.
The Observer, whose web address is www.madisonobserver.org, learned that the domains www.madisonobserver.com and www.madisonobserver.net had been anonymously purchased March 11 and were redirecting Internet users to the Beacon's website.
When confronted with the allegations, the Beacon reportedly denied all responsibility.
However, during an \informal encounter"" on Apr. 17, a Beacon staffer allegedly told two members of the Observer's staff that Beacon Editor in Chief Timothy Shea was directly involved in purchasing and redirecting the domains.
The Observer alleges the Beacon engaged in cybersquatting by obtaining a domain name confusingly similar to that of the Observer and using it in bad faith, per the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act.
The UW-Madison Space Place, the outreach and public education arm of the UW-Madison astronomy department, will be moving in June from its present location on South Park Street to a location inside Villager Mall, 2300 S. Park St., according to a UW-Madison release.
The new venue is 4,000 square feet larger than the current Space Place, and will be better suited to serving the educational needs of the students and citizens of Madison who visit.
The UW-Madison Space Place provides an opportunity for the people to learn about all things intergalactic, including planets and the cosmos.
Groups are also able to learn about the practical elements of space education, such as how to use a telescope.
