Barrows returns to Bascom Hall today

Today Former Assistant to the Chancellor Paul Barrows will return to his academic staff back-up position at UW-Madison as the Senior Administrative Programming Specialist in the Provost's office.

Barrows will work out of an office on Bascom Hill and, according to Provost Peter Spear, he will be reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellors in the Office of the Provost.

Spear also noted that Barrows' salary will decrease. In his new position he will earn a salary of $72,881, down from the $191,749 annual salary he received as vice chancellor.

Spear said Barrows' sexual harassment training must be completed before Dec. 31 of this year. In his new position, Spear said that Barrows will have no contact with students and will not have anyone reporting to him.

Spear said the indefinite position will entail working with various staff members performing such duties as researching academic initiatives, developing transfer agreements between UW-Madison and surrounding community colleges, working with the academic staff search committees as well as various other duties.

In an e-mail notifying Barrows of his duties upon returning, Spear said, \the situation is likely to be awkward and difficult.""

After former Dean of Students Luoluo Hong described her working environment as ""toxic and hostile,"" due to Barrows' inappropriate conduct, many campus women's groups expressed concern over the exposure of UW-Madison women to multiple instances of sexual harassment. ""We do believe that everyone deserves to work in a place that is safe for them and free of sexual harassment,"" Outreach Coordinator for the Campus Women's Center Emily Sturm said. ""We hope to preserve that right for everyone.\
