Letters to the Editor

As a father of two teenage daughters, I applaud Jill Klosterman's well written article, \UW women move forward."" One aspect which the article touches on, but doesn't fully address, is ""standards."" In my humble opinion, if women are to achieve full equality in any of the professions you mention, they must be held to equal standards.

Otherwise, even an outstanding female professional will never overcome the stigma of being promoted ""just because she's a woman,"" regardless of whether or not that stigma is deserved.

The U.S. Army jobs that remained closed to female soldiers encompass the most physically demanding duties in the Army. I'd also mention that female soldiers are graded on a different physical fitness scale than their male counterparts. It's a tough sell to open the remaining jobs until all soldiers are evaluated in the same manner.
