UW students to sell their artwork at Memorial Union

UW-Madison student artists are gearing up to show and sell their artwork at the annual Fall Student Art Sale beginning today and running until Nov. 18.

The annual sale is sponsored by the Wisconsin Union Directorate Art Committee and will be held in the Porter Butts Gallery in the Memorial Union.

According to Eva Quigley, UW-Madison junior and co-coordinator of the event, the sale allows UW-Madison artists to not only make money, but gain exposure.

'Exposure is a little bit more important,' Quigley said. 'Because [the artists] are students, not all of them have enough work to have it in a show or exhibition in one of our galleries.'

Quigley says prices at the sale range from $5 photographs to $250 framed prints. The artists price their own work.

UW-Madison graduate student Melanie Kehoss is participating in the sale for the second year.

Kehoss said she made more than expected selling her art last year, bringing in about $100. '[When pricing my artwork,] I think about how much money I would be willing to part with it for,' Kehoss said.

Kehoss said she agreed the benefit of the sale is exposure more than money making. She added while there are a lot of different sales where student artists can sell their work, the Fall Student Art Sale is one of the best opportunities.

'This one probably gets the most traffic because it's in the Union,' Kehoss said.

Kehoss experienced the benefits of having her artwork exposed by participating in the art sale last year.

'One of the organizers invited me to be involved in a project she was doing,' Kehoss said. 'So I had a show as a result of the sale, in addition to the satisfaction that people pay money for my artwork.'
