Women promote issue ranking Wis. no. 1 party school
Capitol Centre Foods, 111 North Broom St., hosted half a dozen of UW-Madison's Playboy co-eds Tuesday during a promotion for the magazine's newest college issue. Usually putting out one college issue in October, the second one released April 7 featured Girls of the Top Ten Party Schools,\ with UW-Madison at the top of the list.
""We're promoting the issue, kicking it off now that it's on the newsstand and hoping to create some excitement on campus about it,"" said Playboy's Publicity Manager Theresa Hennessey.
Playboy's editorial staff determined the Top Ten Party Schools and the magazine, with its school specified co-eds, are touring the campuses to promote the issue.
Ellen Swenson, a UW-Madison sophomore, attended the signing in a friend's stead, and although believing Playboy's visit and UW-Madison's rank as No. 1 party school is exciting, said she would not have ventured to Capitol Centre Foods herself.
Capitol Centre Foods owner John Leemkuil said his store was an ideal signing site because the store sells a fair amount of Playboy on a regular basis and had the room and location to accommodate the promotion.
""It's kind of neat that they're here, it's certainly different and the students apparently are thrilled by it,"" Leemkuil said.
He said he hopes the event will benefit Capitol Centre Foods through building sales and drawing attention to the store.
""I've been a fan of Playboy for many years now,"" said Jordan Brown, a UW-Madison sophomore. He said he believes Madison's No. 1 status is well-deserved.
However, UW-Madison senior and Coordinator at the Campus Women's Center, Devon Heim, said she is disappointed at the representation the ad produces about the UW-Madison campus and students who are not accurately represented.
""I think that symbols can lead to ideas and representations and if we show that UW-Madison is a school that parties by objectifying women, I think that has a powerful symbol that some people could use in a physical, very real and damaging way,"" Heim said.
Colleen Glandt, UW-Madison senior and model in the ""Top Ten Party School"" issue said she was proud to have participated.
""Playboy has good photos and good articles,"" Glandt said. ""I'm glad that I did it.""
She said the co-eds had the choice of what to show, and with her parents supporting her, opted to pose in a bikini. Glandt said she believes the issue is good publicity for the school and for Capitol Centre Foods.
""We study hard, but we also party hard,"" Glandt said.
