Despite a conflict between university spring break and Madison alder elections, the university has no plans to reschedule spring break.
""Although break cannot be changed, UW-Madison will work to publicize absentee options for students planning to travel,"" UW-Madison spokesperson John Lucas said in a statement.
The spring elections for the City of Madison are traditionally held on the first Tuesday in April. This year, the date will be April 3, which overlaps with the dates of spring break, set for March 31 through April 8. According to Lucas, ""Academic calendars are set years in advance and this is the first time in recent memory that there has been a conflict.""
Ald. Austin King, District 8, who is up for re-election, said he was upset when he found out about the scheduling conflict.
""This is just an outrage,"" King said. ""This could lead to potentially thousands of students being disenfranchised.""
King said he is in talks with Mayor Dave Cieslewicz about convincing the university to switch its spring break dates.
