Paddling through our lost paradise

Abandoning solid ground for a glassy water excursion can be one of the most relaxing and invigorating ways to explore a national park.

For pure adventure, look no further than the final frontier. Alaska's Denali National Park is home to some of the nation's most challenging whitewater rafting excursions.

""It's definitely more intense than your basic rafting excursion,"" said Denali Park Ranger Sally Kimms.

To completely escape, there is no better option than a kayak trip through Everglades National Park in Florida. A 99-mile route from the northwest corner of Florida down to Flamingo features wildlife ranging from manatees to vast bird life.

""One of the main challenges is that it is a wilderness area and it's not marked,"" said park ranger Gail Fox. ""It does require some navigation.""

If these more intense boating options are not for you, try a canoe trip down the Little Missouri River through Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Badlands of South Dakota. Although it is usually a relaxing trip, it is necessary to be prepared for danger.

""The river can change from calm to torrential if a storm comes up.""said park ranger David Nyles. ""Make sure you're prepared for any situation.""

Whatever your preferred water craft, most national parks have an option that will allow you to experience adventure on their waters.
