The new Show and Blow"" procedure implemented at last Saturday's Badger football game received mixed reviews from those involved.
""I blew zeroes which pretty much made my game day un-fun,"" said a 21-year-old UW-Madison junior on the ""Show and Blow"" list who showed up about five minutes into the game. ""[The of-age limit of] .08 is pretty low so I pretty much didn't drink at all.""
""If I wasn't a big football fan, I wouldn't go to the games at all.""
The Offices of the Dean of Students, which is carrying out the program, thought the debut was successful overall.
""We think the students responded pretty well, and for the most part had a good attitude about it,"" said Ervin Cox, an ODOS assistant dean.
Having done a ""Show and Blow"" type procedure to targeted students in the past, Saturday's game was the first time the program was expanded to all students with a past ejection or citation.
According to Cox, all students that participated in the voluntary Portable Breathalyzer Test on Saturday were admitted into the game by blowing a .00 for those students under 21 or below .08 for of-age students.
He said the students that could not make it to the game notified ODOS, while others on the list do not have season tickets.
""It may seem harsh to some people, but the other option is to not let them come to any more games at all,"" Cox said.
UW Police Lt. Bill Larson said he also thought the game turned out well, although UWPD is not involved in ""Show and Blow.""
In comparison to the 2005 night game at Camp Randall against the Michigan Wolverines, which ended with 69 total citations, Larson said the 43 total citations during Saturday night's game against the Iowa Hawkeyes was lower than
expected.
""The Dean of Students' involvement with us during a football game has kept the repeat offender rate down to almost nothing, so based on [the low citation numbers], I think that it's very successful,"" Larson said.
According to Cox, out of the thirty-five UW-Madison students cited at the Iowa game, only students with citations relating to alcohol will be added to the list in subsequent weeks.
There is talk internally about whether or not ODOS will start to flag the vouchers electronically, but Cox said ODOS does not ""want to go that far yet.
