The Great Dane is a friendly Madison restaurant and bar with decent food. The restaurant has two locations close to campus: one near the Capitol and another located at Hilldale Mall.
Although I have been to both locations, the downtown restaurant is clearly superior. At night, the Dane is generally bustling with activity, and is great for ordering appetizers to share with a table full of friends. Some of the better appetizers include the Dane's beer bread as well as their cheesy artichoke-veggie dip.
Most of the traditional bar food is adequate. The important tip to remember about the Dane is to not get too adventurous: on my last visit, I ordered the teriyaki tuna burger, and it was a disaster.
I highly recommend eating at the Dane if you are on the prowl for decent bar food around the Capitol with a large group of friends.
Overall 3/4
