Project Blue Light honors fallen law enforcement officials

Red and green are usually synonymous with the Christmas season, but this winter some are asking to add blue to the holiday color palette.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office and Concerns of Police Survivors announced Project Blue Light Wednesday to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

The sheriff's office and COPS are encouraging community members to include at least one blue light in their holiday decorations in honor of fallen officers. They also suggest tying a blue ribbon to a car antenna to show support.

COPS is a national nonprofit organization that provides resources to assist surviving family members and affected co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, according to its mission statement.

The blue light is also intended as a reminder to support current officers working on the streets or in jails, according to COPS.

Dolly Craig, the mother-in-law of Pennsylvania police officer Daniel Gleason, started Project Blue Light after Gleason was killed in the line of duty in 1986. Two years later, Gleason's wife, who had been a strong advocate for COPS, was also killed.

A display honoring members of the sheriff's office who died this year can be viewed in the lobby of the Public Safety Building at 115 W. Doty St.
