Thank you for the important editorial you published on Monday. In the editorial, you suggest that my response to members of the Dane County Board of Supervisors was appropriate, but you also express concern that I have not addressed the larger issue of animal care and research on campus. I write to remind you that Provost DeLuca and I have proposed a significant reorganization of our research enterprise, in part because of our concerns about safety and compliance issues, including animal research. We are currently awaiting the report of the Faculty Task Force established by the University Committee and charged with responding to our proposal. We anticipate making significant progress this semester about how research should be organized so we can meet the needs of our researchers while ensuring safety and compliance.
