Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk will have to step down by December 28 in order to hold a special election to find her replacement April 5.
Government Accountability Board officials confirmed Wednesday what they suggested weeks ago that Falk cannot wait until the spring to step down if the special election is to take place alongside the general spring elections, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
County Board Supervisor Analiese Eicher said she was initially concerned over the possibility of the special election being moved to the summer, as it would significantly disenfranchise the student vote.
Although she has not yet said whether she will step down in December, Falk indicated in a memo earlier this month that she is ""timing this so as not to require a special election that would be off-cycle of the normal course of elections and so as not to engender costs to taxpayers.""
