Overture Committee approved of a recommendation for the city to buy the center

The Overture Ad Hoc Committee voted 6-3 in favor of an endorsement for the City of Madison to take partial ownership of the Overture Center Friday.

Part of the motion was that the city buy Overture Center for $1 and will have a private nonprofit operate it.

The Common Council will now decide whether or not to purchase the $205 million center, whether to have a nonprofit operate it and whether the employees should work for the city or the nonprofit.

Committee members Ald. Tim Bruer, District 14, James Garner and former Mayor Paul Soglin voted against the motion.

Soglin said the city will be facing ""enormous costs"" for the next 30 to 40 years if the city chooses to buy the Overture Center.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the city currently contributes $1.4 million annually plus inflation to the center. It would have to cover an estimated $500,000 a tear for debt payments on maintenance for the next 15 years if it takes ownership.

Mayor Dave Cieslewicz came before the committee before the meeting began to thank the committee.

""I want a process and a resolution that is viable so the Overture is successful long into the future,"" Cieslewicz said.

Cieslewicz said he believes the committee and the City may not have all the answers, but can come up with a ""rock-solid solution.""

Common Council will look at recommendations and is set to make a decision before the end of the year.
