State Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Madison, and state Sen. Fred Risser, D-Madison, proposed a bill Wednesday that would restore funding for a bicycle grant program that was cut earlier this year.
In 2009, the Joint Finance Committee, of which Pocan was co-chair, secured $5 million in state funds for the bike grant program that was defunded under this year's budget. The program developed bike paths and encouraged bike transportation throughout the state.
Although the state government left funds for airport, freight rail, and harbor transportation projects in place, it cut funds for the bicycle grant program, according to Pocan and Risser.
""Biking is good for the health of not only Wisconsin, but the health of our economy,"" Risser said
Legislators have until Oct. 27 to co-sponsor the bill.
