A state Assembly member asked fellow Rep. Peggy Krusick, D-Milwaukee, to remove herself from caucus Thursday after Krusick proposed a controversial amendment earlier this week.
Rep. Leon Young, D-Milwaukee, asked Krusick to voluntarily leave the Democratic Caucus because her "maverick voting record" conflicted with caucus interests.
Krusick introduced an amendment Tuesday that would eliminate race as a factor for receiving the state's Talent Incentive Grant.
In order to qualify for the grant, students must be of a lower socioeconomic status and meet one other criteria. This could include being a first-generation college student, being a current or former prison inmate, having a disability or being black, American-Indian, Latino or Hmong.
Krusick's proposed amendment received approval from Assembly Republicans and sparked nine hours of overnight debate before passing along party lines.
Although Young said he respects Krusick's voice, he believes her actions undermined the caucus and "the only recourse is for [Krusick] to remove herself."
"Standing up for minorities is a core value of the Democratic Party," said Young in a statement. "Krusick's amendment is counterproductive to our objectives."
Krusick could not be reached for comment Thursday.
