Police arrested one of two suspects Saturday who were allegedly involved in the May 19 downtown shooting incident that resulted in at least three injured people.
The Manitowoc Police Department arrested 22-year-old Derek Cannon and later contacted the Madison Police Department, according to MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain.
The MTPD obtained information Cannon was staying in the area, and later saw a man they believed to be Cannon exiting a tavern with an acquaintance, according to MTPD Capt. Scott Luchterhand.
Cannon tried to hide in the backseat of the car when MTPD officers tried to talk to Cannon and his friend, according to Luchterhand.
Luchterhand said Cannon first lied about his identity but eventually admitted to who he was.
“He didn’t put up a fight,” Luchterhand said. “But he tried to represent himself as somebody else to begin with.”
MPD officers drove to Sheboygan and arrested Cannon on tentative charges for endangering safety and bail jumping, according to police.
Police say Cannon was the second person who fired shots outside Segredo and Johnny O’s Sports Lounge on the 600 block of University Avenue around 1 a.m. during UW-Madison’s graduation weekend.
Police also have enough evidence to arrest a second suspect, 22-year-old Darrion Brown, for attempted homicide.
Three people were injured and treated for gunshot wounds following the incident, but police believe a fourth person may have been injured because detectives found a blood trail leading away from the crime scene, according to DeSpain.
