Uthoff to transfer to hometown Iowa

Former Wisconsin men’s basketball forward Jarrod Uthoff will transfer to Iowa, where the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native will be eligible to play for the Hawkeyes in the 2013-’14 season.

Uthoff decided to leave the Badger program after the 2011-’12 season, which the freshman spent as a redshirt.

His transfer request brought about national criticism to the Wisconsin program, as head coach Bo Ryan blocked Uthoff from transferring to more than 20 schools, including the rest of the Big Ten conference (11), the entire Atlantic Coast Conference (12), Marquette, Iowa State and Florida.

Ryan said he put such restrictions on Uthoff in order to get the freshman to talk to University officials—Uthoff informed Ryan of his decision to transfer while Ryan was on vacation, and the head coach was uncertain as to why Uthoff wanted to leave the program. Uthoff met with athletic director Barry Alvarez and associate athletic director Justin Doherty, who lifted all restrictions except the other 11 Big Ten schools.

Those trimmed restrictions prohibited Uthoff from directly contacting another Big Ten coaching staff. However, a new Big Ten rule enabled the forward to obtain a grant-in-aid from Iowa, so long as he pays his own way next year.
