Domestic argument involves knife, fire

A fight between a man and a woman went up in flames at a building on North Hamilton Street, where firefighters responded to a call about a fire alarm Monday.

When officials arrived at the scene around 2:30 a.m., the fire was already out. Firefighters do not know how it was extinguished, according to Madison Fire Department spokesperson Lori Wirth.

Firefighters said a fire began during a domestic dispute between a man and woman after both had been out drinking.

The situation escalated when the man held a knife to his own throat and cut himself without causing a severe injury, according to Wirth.

Then, the man ignited a pile of clothes on the couch with a cigarette lighter, causing the fire alarms to sound, the woman told the MFD.

The man allegedly pushed the woman into the burning clothes, causing minor burns, according to the release.

Both the woman and man refused medical care for their injuries, said Wirth.
