Madison police said a gunman entered an East Gilman Street apartment and robbed the tenant on Tuesday around noon.
The suspect, who police say is an African American man in his thirties, walked into an apartment on the 100 block of East Gilman Street through an unlocked door, according to Madison Police Department spokesman Joel DeSpain.
The intruder said to the victim, “Give me what you got,” according to DeSpain.
Police said the gunman appeared to want cash but left with the victim’s laptop in a white, 1990s work van.
Ald. Scott Resnick, District 8, said the proximity of this crime to campus is a cause for reflection on city safety policies.
“[The robbery] is a call to double down and continue some of the efforts to continue increasing safety,” Resnick said.
Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said armed home invasions are seldom random acts of violence, although he said he did not know if this robbery was random.
