The Dane County Sheriff’s Office declared Saturday that an inmate was missing after he cut off his monitoring device and ran away from a rehab facility where he was residing.
Dane County Lt. David Karls said in a statement a deputy sheriff was unable to contact 21-year-old Jason Helgestad, who is currently serving a 180-day sentence for retail theft and bail jumping.
Helgestad was living in a correctional facility as part of the Pathfinders program, an alternative rehabilitative service that provides therapy and education to inmates in order to reduce overcrowding in county jails, according to Dane County Intervention Services.
Karls said Helgestad allegedly cut off his GPS monitoring device after leaving the facility without permission.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information on Helgestad’s location to call 911.
