University police will monitor if cyclists on the southeast side of campus have the proper lighting on their bicycles as a part of the Be Bright safety initiative Tuesday evening.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department is working with Safe Communities to inform cyclists about proper bike lighting in addition to installing bike lights, according to Officer Kristin Radtke.
Radtke said officers are treating this initiative as an opportunity to educate cyclists on legal bicycle lighting.
“[Violators] will not be penalized,” Radtke said. “They will be talked to by an officer and given a free light.”
