A woman was sexually assaulted on South Bassett Street late Saturday night, according to a downtown city official.
Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said the incident occurred midnight and was a “very serious and violent attack … on a young woman.”
The suspect and the victim did not know each other, according to Verveer.
Police remained at the crime scene for approximately six hours to process the incident, according to Verveer.
Madison Police Department Sgt. Matt Schroedl confirmed the sexual assault and said police are still investigating the incident.
Verveer said police will release specifics on the incident Monday and could not disclose more details on the crime.
“The police are taking this incident extremely seriously,” Verveer said.
