President Barack Obama will speak Monday outside the City County Building and the Madison Municipal building on the 200 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard near the Capitol, according to a statement from Mayor Paul Soglin.
The general admission entrance will be located at West Mifflin and State Street and doors will open at 7 a.m., according to a statement from the Obama campaign. Ald. Mike Verveer, District 4, said the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 11:30 a.m.
There is no cost to the public, but those attending the event need to RSVP at www.barackobama.com/Madison2012, according to the statement.
Bruce Springsteen, who is performing at the rally, and Obama will use a stage set up in front of the City County Building, 210 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., facing the Madison Municipal Building, 215 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., according to Verveer.
The rally on Monday will be similar to Obama’s Oct. 4 event on Bascom Hill, Verveer said, with United States Secret Service members organizing security and weapon screening for all those attending the rally.
Security will be set up near Capitol Square at Main Street, according to Verveer.
Due to the president’s visit to Madison, city engineers announced road closures near Capitol Square for President Barack Obama’s visit to Madison Monday, Nov. 5.
The 100 and 200 blocks of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard will be closed beginning Sunday, Nov. 4 at 8 a.m. until Monday, Nov. 5, according to a City Traffic Engineering statement.
Beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, Main, Doty and Wilson Streets from Carroll to Pinckney Streets will be closed.
The entire inner portion of Capitol Square will also be closed at 11 a.m Sunday. The 100 blocks of West Washington Avenue, State Street, Wisconsin Avenue and East Washington Avenue in addition to the 100 and 200 blocks of South Pinckney Street will be closed.
On the day of Obama’s rally, 100 and 200 blocks of South Pinckney and the 200 block of South Carroll Street will be closed beginning at 3 a.m.
Also on Monday, West Wilson Street between Carroll and Hamilton Streets will be closed, including inbound West Wilson Street between Broom and Henry Streets.
For those traveling to the rally in a car, there will be special event parking at all Madison parking garages and the gated area of Brayton Lot, 1 South Butler St., according to a statement from city Parking Operations Manager Tom Woznick.
Special event parking, which will begin at 6 a.m. at all locations, costs $5 and must be paid in cash when entering the garage, according to the statement.
Woznick said in the statement there will be limited parking available and encourages “attendees from the campus and Madison community to walk, bike or use public transportation.”
