Board of Regents approves increase to out-of-state enrollment cap

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved a resolution in support of increasing the cap on out-of-state student enrollment at UW-Madison Friday.

Beginning next year the university will allow for 27.5 percent of the freshman class to be out-of-state or international students, an increase from the current 25 percent cap.

Also in the meeting, the Board stated its approval of the contentious UW-Madison Human Resources redesign plan, as well as a similar plan put forward for the rest of the UW System.

Regent Gerald Whitburn, chair of the Business, Finance and Audit Committee that approved support for the plan Thursday, said the new system acknowledges the important role played by classified staff, soon to be renamed university staff.

“The over 1,200 men and women in this new workforce category make it possible for the smooth, safe and efficient operation of this facility and other facilities and properties, offices and programs we have throughout the UW system,” Whitburn said. “Needless to say these positions and the people in them are all critical to the university operations.”

“University staff” will see the biggest changes in personnel matters under the implementation of the plan, including new governance rights as well as changes to job security policies.

The state legislature will need to vote to approve both plans before their implementation on July 1, 2013.

The Board also passed a resolution in favor of granting a salary increase to the UW-Madison and UW-Eau Claire chancellors. Search committees are currently in the process of selecting candidates for both positions.
