Madison police arrest man for striking Meriter Hospital staff with metal pole

Four Madison police officers responded to a man hitting Meriter Hospital staff members with a metal pole and arrested him for battery and disorderly conduct Tuesday.

Jason Bender, 33, left Meriter Hospital, 202 S. Park St., against medical advice after he was admitted for undisclosed reasons, according to a statement made by Madison Police Department Lt. Cory Nelson.

Nelson said Bender then went to his nearby parked car, drank alcohol and returned to the hospital’s eighth floor with a three foot long metal pole.

When Meriter Hospital security responded to Bender striking counters and creating a disturbance, Bender hit two of the security officers with the pole, according to Nelson.

Bender also bit one of the security officers in the head, breaking the skin, Nelson said. He continued to struggle with the officers and kicked a nurse in the stomach.

At this point, four MPD officers intervened, although Bender bit one of the officer’s hand in the struggle, according to Nelson.

Police officers eventually took Bender to Dane County Jail, according to the report.

In total, two Meriter security guards, two Meriter nurses, one social worker and one police officer received minor injuries in the incident, police reported.
