Prominent actor James Cromwell charged in PETA protesting incident

Police charged ‘Babe’ and ‘L.A. Confidential’ actor James Cromwell Friday with disorderly conduct for interrupting a University of Wisconsin Board of Regents meeting to protest the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s use of cats to conduct research, according to a Wisconsin State Journal article.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals affiliate Cromwell, 73, and fellow 25-year-old PETA activist Jeremy Beckham, shouted “Shame on UW!” at a Feb. 7 Board of Regents meeting, while carrying signs displaying pictures of cats that underwent cochlear implant surgeries, according to a video PETA released to The Daily Cardinal.

PETA’s accusations of animal cruelty in UW-Madison research labs dates back to Sept. 2012

The State Journal reported the protestors originally faced possible jail time, but the charges are now being considered civil ordinance violations rather than criminal charges. The two men each face up to $1,000 in fines.
