UW engineering students win snowmobile modification competition

A group of University of Wisconsin-Madison engineering students won the Clean Snowmobile Challenge for the fifth time last week.

The competition, hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers, asked teams to reduce snowmobiles’ emissions and noise, while still maintaining low costs and high performance. The competition included representatives from multiple universities.

The team from UW-Madison added a turbocharger and extra engine controls to an existing snowmobile, causing the vehicle to decrease noise and emissions while maintaining high quality performance.

The team also won the Blue Ribbon Coalition award for using the most practical solution to solve the challenge, according to a university release. The team was also awarded bonus points for not requiring extra maintenance on oil, exhaust or fuel after testing.
