Community members will hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Paul Heenan, who died last year after being shot by a police officer, at the City County Building Friday.
Amelia Royko Maurer and Nathan Royko Maurer said in an email announcement for the event they hope vigil will honor Heenan’s life and convey to Madison Police Department Chief Noble Wray as well as Mayor Paul Soglin they “will not allow for Paulie’s insurmountable loss to be dishonored.”
The Maurers began a Change.org petition to remove Madison Police Officer Stephen Heimsness, who fatally shot Heenan in November, from his post at the force. Heenan, who was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, entered his neighbors’ house by mistake.
Heimsness is currently on paid administrative leave while the U.S. Department of Justice investigates the legal justification behind his actions.
The vigil will begin at 8 p.m.
