Innovative design earns UW Students $5,000

A group of University of Wisconsin-Madison undergraduate students won $5,000 Wednesday for developing a way to re-capture the heat generated from laptops to conduct electricity.

The team won the university’s Dvorak Energy Innovation Prize during the Wisconsin Energy and Sustainability Challenge. The WESC challenges all UW-Madison students to develop original technology that improves or advances environmental sustainability.

The invention, called JouleJack captures the heat through a laptop case that doubles as a portable charger for cell phones or other electronic devices.

The Dvorak Energy Innovation Prize is funded by UW-Madison father and son alumni Stephen and Eric Dvorak and their family.
