Madison police officers will be present on and around Langdon Street, in addition to the Mifflin Street area May 4 due to the overflow of students from the 2012 block party into the Greek community following last year’s stricter Mifflin patrols, according to Langdon neighborhood Police Officer Grant Humerickhouse.
Recently, Madison Police Department chief Noble Wray released a letter outlining this year’s Mifflin Street block party policies, which resemble last year’s rules with the exception of a new “no-tolerance” illegal house party stipulation.
This year, Humerickhouse said in a letter to area residents, there will be increased security in his regional patrol to prevent underage drinking, procuring alcohol for people under the age of 21, dispensing alcohol without a license and carrying open intoxicants on the street.
Humerickhouse also suggested his residents hang up official MPD “no trespassing” signs to stop uninvited guests from flooding the area and causing overcrowding problems. He said police will attempt to control illegal activities by citing law-breaking individuals without a first warning.
Humerickhouse echoed Wray’s sentiment to the Mifflin community and “strongly [recommended]” fraternities and sororities planning to host house parties in the Langdon neighborhood reconsider. He added in the letter that even if a Greek organization has a May 4 event sanctioned by the University of Wisconsin or the Interfraternity Council, it will not be exempt from city policies.
“A [University of Wisconsin] sanctioned event through the Greek Council does not exempt law enforcement action.”
Langdon police will be available to answer questions about the policies until May 3 and throughout the weekend via email or telephone, Humerickhouse said.
